Havana Health and Wellness Center

Since its beginning in 1950, the Florida State University College of Nursing has had a history
of community outreach and serving the underserved. In keeping with this tradition, the College
of Nursing in collaboration with an interprofessional team of health care providers is working
on establishing a state-of-the-art Health and Wellness Center at Havana Middle School. The
interprofessional team includes faculty and students from the FSU Colleges of Medicine,
Communications and Information, and Social Work, officials from Florida A&M University,
Tallahassee Community College, and the Gadsden County School Board and Health Department.

Shirley Aaron (the project’s Steering Committee Chair) notes that the citizens of Havana have
limited access to care with only one practicing physician. A large number of Havana’s citizens
are uninsured. Specifically, the mission of the Havana Health and Wellness Center (HHWC) is
to provide high quality, collaborative integrative health services focused on advancing a healthy
sustainable lifestyle and eliminating health disparities.

Initially, the center will provide services to Havana Middle School students and employees with
future plans to expand and provide services to the entire community.
