Building on the Legacy of Nursing Educational Excellence
October 25-27, 2007
Thursday, October 25, 2007: Alumni Conference

The College of Nursing's 2007 homecoming celebration was held October 25-26 in Vivian M. Duxbury Hall. The celebration began Thursday evening with the Alumni Conference. The conference activities included a building tour showcasing the Learning Resource Center, the Skills Lab and the Legacy Project. College of Nursing (CON) alumni, current students, faculty and staff also had the opportunity to network with one another before attending the Conference. The conference consisted of a State of the College address from Dean Lisa Ann Plowfield, PhD, RN and a presentation by CON alumna and FSU Associate Professor Roxanne Hauber, PhD, RN, (BSN '70), on "Challenges for Nursing Education in the 21st Century."
Dean Plowfield spoke to the challenges facing the College and the nursing profession. She shared her vision for aligning education at the College with nursing education at the national level and the challenges involved.
Dr. Roxanne Hauber's presentation included information on how little nursing education has changed in over 100 years, yet the demands on and for nurses has changed greatly. To emphasize how little the process for educating nurses has changed, she showed participants a set of questions from a nursing quiz in the early 1900s that closely resembled questions that are still being asked of nursing students today. She also spoke on the faculty shortage and its impact on the nursing shortage, as well as some of nursing's "sacred cows" that might be prohibitive to nursing as a forward moving profession.
