BIOGRAPHY

Lucinda J. Graven, PhD, APRN, FAHA, is a family nurse practitioner with over 15 years of nursing education experience at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Dr. Graven’s research focuses on improving outcomes for heart failure patients through the development and testing of cognitive-behavioral interventions at both the individual, dyad, and family levels. Her preliminary research in heart failure patients, generated knowledge on the impact of psychosocial factors, such as social support and social problem-solving on self-care and depressive symptoms. These findings were fundamental to the development of the Coping in Heart Failure (COPE-HF) Partnership Intervention for patients living in community settings. Recognizing the importance of family caregivers in helping heart failure patients maintain optimal self-care, Dr. Graven’s research also involves family-level research. Her research has expanded to include the examination of predictors of adverse outcomes in heart failure caregivers and the development of interventions to improve caregiver contribution to heart failure self-care. Combined with her patient research, findings from her caregiver work have been instrumental in the development of a family intervention to improve heart failure self-care.
