Dr. Rylan J. Douthett is a registered nurse, and Family Nurse Practitioner, with a passion for nursing education. Prior to his arrival at FSU, Dr. Douthett spent his career working for the U.S Department of Veterans Affairs. He has extensive experience with psychiatry and medical/surgical nursing. Throughout his career, Dr. Douthett has focused on the training and mentoring of new-graduate nurses. He has experience leading didactics in hospital settings and educational institutions. His areas of interest include leadership techniques that foster growth and development of nurses, as well as strategies aimed at retaining nurses in clinical environments.
As a Family Nurse Practitioner, Dr. Douthett has focused on hypertension diagnostics and management in primary care settings. Specifically, his work focuses on the rates of adherence to the Joint National Committee guidelines, and outcomes associated with poor compliance. As teaching faculty at FSU, Dr. Douthett is focused on using simulation labs to develop skills and expose students to complex clinical scenarios. His work is aimed at preparing students to meet the real-world challenges of the healthcare industry, and to bridge the gap between academia and the clinical environment.
