Eugenia Flores Millender Named Marie Cowart Endowed Professor in the FSU College of Nursing

Dr. Millender, assistant dean for research, appointed Marie Cowart Endowed Professor at College of Nursing.


The Florida State University College of Nursing has appointed Eugenia Flores Millender, Ph.D., RN, MS, PMHNP-BC, FAAN, as the Marie Cowart Endowed Professor, a prestigious honor recognizing her outstanding leadership in nursing research, education and community health engagement.

The professorship was established by Marie E. Cowart, BSN, DrPH, FAAN, a nurse and former dean of the FSU College of Social Sciences and Public Policy who served as a professor at the College of Nursing for many years. The professorship ensures enduring support for visionary nurse scholars whose work uplifts the profession and strengthens communities.

“I am deeply honored and thrilled to accept the appointment as the Marie Cowart Endowed Professor in the FSU College of Nursing,” said Dr. Millender, who serves as the assistant dean for Research at the College of Nursing. “This meaningful recognition fuels my passion to lead bold, transformative work in nursing research, education and mental health. Lifting voices, breaking barriers and creating lasting impact in the communities we serve.”

Dr. Millender is a nationally recognized expert in health disparity and mental health, particularly for historically underserved populations. She serves as co-founder and co-director of the Center of Population Sciences for Health Empowerment, where her work bridges clinical practice and community-based research to drive sustainable health outcomes.

Her contributions have earned national distinction, including her recent recognition as one of Time Magazine’s Closers—a spotlight on influential changemakers.

“Dr. Millender exemplifies the values and mission of the College of Nursing,” said Jing Wang, Ph.D., MPH, RN, FAAN, dean of the College of Nursing “Her leadership in mental health, dedication to mentoring students and success in securing competitive research funding make her a leader among leaders. We are proud to have her represent this endowed professorship.” Dean Wang emphasized that the professorship, which includes an annual support for research efforts, reflects the College’s strategic commitment to faculty excellence and cutting-edge research collaboration.

“In her new role, I am confident that Dr. Millender will continue to elevate the College of Nursing’s national standing in research and innovative nursing practice,” she said. “This appointment not only honors her achievements but also ensures the legacy of Dr. Marie E. Cowart continues to inspire future generations”.
