Dr. Erik M. Salsgiver is a registered nurse and board-certified family nurse practitioner. His career has included clinical practice in critical care, cardiology, interventional procedural nursing, and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. He also held roles as an educator and leader in multiple healthcare settings before coming to FSU. Erik provided oversight and input for projects such as developing nursing workforce, processes, and practice guidelines to facilitate the opening of a critical access hospital; defining and establishing a professional nursing role for interventional radiology within a large tertiary medical center, and development of educational and therapeutic interventions for cardiopulmonary rehabilitation and congestive heart failure patients.
His areas of interest include dietary and lifestyle interventions to decrease cardiometabolic risk, nursing practice/process improvement, and educating/equipping patients to take an active role in their health. In his instruction, Erik emphasizes using the nursing process to identify priority patient needs and enact evidence-based interventions to address them. He also works to instill the value of lifelong learning to help students achieve the highest level of excellence in practice and adapt to rapid changes in healthcare delivery.
